Downs Barn Farm Most Definately one of Cornwall's Finest
Welcome to Downs Barn Farm
At Downs Barn farm our aim is to offer guests the opportunity to relax and take a break from everyday life, whilst enjoying the comforts and little luxuries provided to make your stay here something special and memorable.
A warm friendly welcome awaits you at our 5 Star Silver Award farmhouse bed and breakfast, where nothing is too much trouble. The peace and tranquillity will help you to relax and unwind. Awake to the sounds of birdsong, then have a leisurely start to your day with a delicious farmhouse breakfast using local and organic produce.
Downs Barn Farm is a working arable/beef farm and is situated on the south coast road between Land’s End and Penzance, close to Lamorna, Porthcurno and Mousehole.
West Cornwall can be easily explored from here. Porthcurno with its lovely beaches and the famous open-air Minack theatre are just a few minutes drive away. Land's End, St Ives, Mousehole and Penzance are all close by. There are also numerous pre-historic sites to be found locally, with Cornish crosses, standing stones & stone circles. Myth & legend surround this area, come and experience it for yourself.
Our seasons in West Cornwall are extremely mild and short breaks during the spring and autumn can be particularly beautiful. April brings the bluebells and then in May and June an abundance of wild flowers can be seen on the cliffs and hedgerows. September and October too, are often warm mild months. Perfect for walking the coastal path, where you can often be lucky to see dolphins, basking sharks, seals and many different species of birds.
Downs Barn Farm is open all year round except Christmas.
For the comfort of all our guests we have a no smoking policy in the farmhouse. You are welcome to smoke in the garden.
Dogs are very welcome but must be happy to sleep in your car as we are unable to allow them in the house.
Special Occasions
Downs Barn Farm is perfect if you are looking for somewhere to celebrate a special occasion. Maybe it’s an anniversary, a special birthday or just a romantic break.
We can provide flowers, champagne or a luxury picnic hamper. Perhaps you would like us to book a table for you at a local restaurant, or organize a taxi. We will try our very best to fulfill your requests. Please enquire when booking.

Out of Season Luxury at Boscrowan
Cornwall’s Finest visited Boscrowan Farm on 24th & 25th January 2008. I mention the dates as the end of January is not really the time that most people would plan a break but we are extremely glad that we did. Like many, Christmas and the New Year is a busy time for us and the year stretches long ahead with the prospect of cold days and long nights. Our new year’s resolution was to visit as many of our existing clients as possible and take a mini break as often as we could.
The weather was kind to us and although clouds hovered these seemed to disappear as we were welcomed by Elizabeth from Boscrowan Farm. With a beaming smile she directed us to our private parking space directly behind “Ring & Thimble” one of their two luxury cottages which was to be our home for the next 2 days. With understood pride Elizabeth showed us around the cottage making sure that we were familiar with how to use the Aga and wood burner. Making sure that we knew that if there was anything else we needed, she was only across the drive, Elizabeth left us to explore this wonderful accommodation. My wife and I are familiar with quality accommodation as part of our research for Cornwall’s Finest but neither of us could have been prepared for the labour of love and attention to detail that the owners have put into Boscrowan.
How about this:
Beautiful Scones Jam & Clotted Cream waiting for us
A Picnic Basket available to use if required
A pair of binoculars to use in case we had forgotten ours
A Ruck Sack for the walk we were planning
Freshly cut flowers
Local newspaper and magazines
Suggested Restaurants & Places of Interest
Boscrowan onions and much more…
Soft furnishings are obviously a passion for Elizabeth and this is evident throughout both cottages as they are furnished to the very highest standard using the very best materials. For those looking to relax I can quite categorically say that the six foot bed in Ring & Thimble is the softest most comfortable I have ever slept in and the only sound you will hear is a distant hoot of an Owl.
Slate tiles, open beams, luxury country kitchen, freestanding roll top bath, wood floors, Wi-Fi, Sky T.V, DVD Player and selection of DVD’s … We wanted for nothing even a strategically placed bird table meant doing the washing up was a pleasure
To our delight we realized how well located the cottages were. We managed to explore a great deal of south west Cornwall, including Lands End, Porthcurno, Lamorna, the open air Minack Theatre, Mousehole and Penzance, all only a few miles from Boscrowan. Cornwall is stunning in the summer but can be even more magical in the shoulder months, yes the weather was kind to us but that’s the chance you take, we had the raincoat and the wellies in the car and would not have minded one bit if we had to use them. After a busy day touring it was bliss to arrive at the tranquillity of our luxury accommodation and relax by the fire.
All in all Boscrowan Farm is exactly why we launched www.cornwallsfinest.co.uk to feature these hidden gems that are just what you hoped they would be, that is to say perfect….
All of a sudden the winter does not seem so long and we can only imagine what Boscrowan is like in the spring and summer when all the flowers are in bloom as it was pretty fabulous in January.

Charting your day
Cornwall is evocative to different people in many different ways - Cream teas, fish and chips and children making sandcastles or crabbing from the quay – it is often the smallest details that you most remember – the way the water glinted aqua marine in the sunshine, the splosh as a fish flops back into the water, the feel of white sand between your toes or the call of a cormorant as it dives after a fish.
We have designed standard ½ day itineraries for a cruise which we believe will meet your desires and expectations, whether you’re enjoying a romantic holiday for two or a fun day with your family.
As the cost of chartering a power cruiser for a whole day for yourselves can be expensive, we offer this service to enable couples and smaller families to experience the joys of power cruising the Cornish waters with a fully qualified skipper at a more affordable price than a full day private charter.
For Rates & Enquiries click here

Arriving at the Visitors Yacht Haven, North Quay, Falmouth you will be met by Clive Singleton who will be your skipper and guide for the day. All you have to do is dress for the weather and climb aboard.
On a private chartered power cruise you can relax... safe in the hands of a professionally fully qualified skipper who delights in showing you his part of the world. The entire day will be tailor-made to your requirements with flexibility and personal attention.
You may discuss when making your reservation whether you would prefer to picnic off the boat for lunch in a secluded bay or beach or choose to stay on board and enjoy the luxurious comforts of the MV 'Fossils Venture'. We carry a tender & outboard with us so anywhere is possible!. The choice is yours.
Generally, a half day cruise will begin at 10.00am or 2.00pm and last for approximately 3.5 hrs. Alternatively a full day cruise will begin at 10.00am and return to Falmouth at approximately 5.00pm. At the time of your reservation we may discuss the possibility of meeting earlier or staying out later to take advantage of sunrise and sunset!

Our guests tell us that when they go on holiday they want all of their home conveniences as a minimum, together with those little extras that have come to characterise a stay at Boscrowan. Both Peace & Plenty and Ring & Thimble have high quality fixtures and fittings. The colours and fabrics are carefully selected and chosen to be sympathetic with the period of the properties and surroundings. We have spared no expense our selection of beds and bedding to ensure the comfort of our guests.
To us holiday accommodation is not just a high standard of décor, fittings and facilities but the environment in which our guests enjoy their stay at Boscrowan.
Boscrowan provides space to roam and somewhere to sit and contemplate, a seat by the river, a meal outside in the orchard, a walk across the fields, just the place to relax and recharge. Our guests are invited to roam anywhere around our 25 acres.
Here at Boscrowan we want to play our part in protecting our surroundings for future generations of locals and visitors. To do this we have an environmental and economic plan and invite our guests to participate in this during their stay at Boscrowan. This means we think about things that come into the farm and what leaves the farm.
When we initially renovated both cottages we made a conscious decision to use local builders for the fabric of the building and a local carpenter to design and fit the kitchen. We try to produce a mix that is distinctively ‘Traditional Cornish’; while maintaining the benefits and amenities of modern living.
Everyone produces waste but we have tried to limit the impact on the local environment. Guests are encouraged to use the recycling facilities and compost bins provided. We also provide shopping bags to limit the need for plastic carrier bags from the local shops and we use low energy lightbulbs in a local conservation trial. We also harvest rainwater for use in the garden.
Our hedgerows are maintained sympathetically by not trimming them between March and July and then only one side each year for conservation purposes and we grow a local variety of daffodils in the spring.
For our guests, we provide local clotted cream for their cream tea on arrival, and a bottle of locally produced apple juice in the fridge.
At Boscrowan things never stand still. We use our guest's feedback to maintain and improve our standards, to give you the best in quality holiday accommodation.
While staying at Boscrowan we invite you to help us protect our local environment by recycling where possible with easy to use recycling bags and composting facilities. We are members of CoaST the local scheme for sustainable tourism.
Many of our guests have returned year after year. We have won a number of Cornwall Tourism Awards receiving a highly commended in 2002 and 2004 and Bronze Awards in 2005 and 2006.
